Job Responsibilities

The Director role requires a self-motivated person to perform a broad ranges of functions related to venture capital investing in digital media, Internet and marketing services businesses.  The Director will  create in-depth analyses relative to trends and technology advancements in our focus areas and make recommendations on potential investment opportunities.  On identified investments of interest, the Director will lead due diligence and complete competitive analysis. The role requires ease with all areas of deal execution, including financial modeling, creating and defending investment cases, structuring term sheets and negotiating deal terms.  The Director will, at times, be the primary contact for portfolio investments and will be expected to be an appropriate and articulate representative of Hearst with strong communication and presentation skills.  The position also requires portfolio management, including regular progress reporting to Hearst senior management on select investments and interfacing between the portfolio companies and Hearst properties of interest.  The position is based in New York City.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years post MBA work experience in venture capital, investment banking, business development or corporate development, including financial modeling and market analysis.  Experience with media and technology business models is preferred.
  • Genuine interest in and passion for Internet services or digital media.  We expect you to have a point of view on emerging business models in our areas of focus.
     
  • An existing network of leads in the New York start-up and entrepreneurial community. 
     
  • MBA degree from a top university’s business school.

The Associate will focus on venture capital investing in digital media, Internet and marketing services businesses.  The role requires deal sourcing and origination efforts, market research, competitive analysis and financial modeling. The Associate will be expected both to assist with various stages of deal execution, and to provide value to our existing portfolio companies and entrepreneurs, on an as needed basis.  In addition, the Associate will assist with portfolio management, including maintenance of a deal database and regular reporting on portfolio company operating and financial performance.  The position is based in New York City.  

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years work experience in investment banking, business development or corporate development.  Experience with media and technology business models is preferred.
     
  • Genuine interest in and passion for Internet services or digital media.  We expect you to be familiar with emerging business models in our areas of focus.
     
  • Interest in and the ability to create a network of leads in the New York start-up and entrepreneurial community. 
     
  • Undergraduate degree from a top university or college.
     
  • MBA candidates (from 2010 or 2009) may be considered for this opportunity, but only if they understand the pre-MBA nature of this role, including title, compensation, and tenure (2 years) expectations.
